A herniated disc occurs when part of the spinal disc bulges or ruptures, slipping out of place and compressing the nerves in the spine. This can cause leg pain or weakness, as happened to this woman who suffered greatly from a herniated lumbar disc. However, thanks to the expertise and experience of Dr. Zeiad Yossry, Professor of Neurosurgery and Parkinson's Disease, she was saved and regained her mobility.
My experience with lumbar disc pain:
I had been suffering from lower back pain for a long time, and I thought it was due to the strenuous housework I did as a housewife. I took painkillers to try to control the pain and keep myself active. At first, the pain responded to these painkillers, but over time, the medications became ineffective. I began reducing my housework and increasing my rest periods, but I didn't feel any improvement. The symptoms worsened, as sharp pain ran down the back of my right leg, along with tingling in my leg and foot.
My family was concerned, especially since I was no longer able to do the housework as I had before. I felt like I was failing my family and children because of the back pain I was experiencing. After some time, I began to experience weakness and numbness in my foot. The symptoms worsened until I felt unable to lift the front of my foot and would try to drag my toes while walking. Sometimes, I would trip and fall, which caused concern and fear among my family, who insisted that I should consult a doctor immediately. My family searched for the best doctor specializing in spinal pain, and some relatives recommended Dr. Zeiad Yossry, a professor of neurosurgery and Parkinson's disease, because of his expertise and experience in spinal surgeries.
Consultation with Dr. Zeiad Yossry:
Dr. Zeiad Yossry performed a comprehensive spinal examination after listening to my complaints. The physical examination included detecting loss of muscle control in the lower leg and foot, muscle atrophy in the foot or leg, and difficulty raising the foot and toes. Dr. Zeiad Yossry then ordered tests and imaging. After reviewing the X-rays and tests, Dr. Zeiad Yossry informed me that I was suffering from a lumbar disc rupture, which had compressed the nerves near the discs, affecting various areas of the buttocks, legs, and feet. The compression also led to lumbar radiculopathy due to the narrowing of the space through which the nerve roots exit, resulting in complete foot drop.
Treatment of a ruptured lumbar disc:
Dr. Zeiad Yossry informed me that the appropriate treatment for my condition was surgery to reduce the possibility of permanent nerve damage and persistent leg weakness. Dr. Zeiad Yossry performed a precise lumbar discectomy to remove the ruptured lumbar disc. A surgical incision was made in the skin in the middle of the back, specifically over the affected disc. Dr. Zeiad Yossry then moved the upper back muscles to one side to directly access the spine. Using special instruments, the ruptured lumbar disc was successfully removed.
Recovery from total foot drop:
My recovery was smooth thanks to Dr. Zeiad Yossry's instructions, which recommended limiting bending, lifting, and twisting movements for three to six weeks after surgery. I noticed a marked improvement in my pain after the recovery period, and it completely disappeared after a short period. My overall foot drop also improved significantly. I regretted delaying the decision to undergo surgery. Thanks to Dr. Zeiad Yossry's expertise, skill, and precision, I regained my ability to move freely and actively.
