The progress in neurosurgery in recent years is astonishing, especially when combined with skilled hands, it can achieve miracles. It was unimaginable that one day patients would overcome the crippling symptoms of Parkinson's disease. However, this has become possible thanks to the pioneering work of Dr. Zeiad Yossry, Professor of Neurosurgery and Parkinson's Disease, in successfully treating Parkinson's symptoms.
My Journey with Parkinson’s disease:
Living with Parkinson’s was a painful and life-changing experience that affected both my work and social life. At first, I experienced some symptoms that I didn't expect to be early signs of Parkinson's disease, such as a reduced sense of smell, constipation and digestive issues, excess saliva, and a mask-like facial expression.
After a while, the symptoms became more severe. I began to experience tremors on one side of my body while resting, with my movements slowing down. These symptoms frightened my family, who insisted to consult a doctor as soon as possible.
An initial visit to a neurologist confirmed the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. I was prescribed medication, but after five years, there was no improvement, so I began searching for more advanced treatment options. I had heard about some advanced surgeries that could treat Parkinson's symptoms, so I looked for a doctor who specialized in these advanced surgeries.
Searching for the right specialist:
First, I started searching social media and search engines for a neurologist who specializes in treating movement disorders.
Secondly, after extensive research, I found several doctors specializing in neurosurgery and movement disorders. However, I was extremely confused about which one to choose.
Third, I intensified my research on social media about patients' experiences with these doctors. I found many positive reviews about Dr. Zeiad Yossry, Professor of Neurosurgery and Parkinson's Disease, and his subspecialty in treating movement disorders. I also discovered that he established the first center in Egypt and Africa, called "Parkinson's Egypt," to treat movement disorders, which encouraged me to consult him.
Consultation with Dr. Zeiad Yossry:
Dr. Zeiad Yossry performed a comprehensive examination of my condition and informed me that I was suffering from advanced Parkinson's disease. He explained that deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery could effectively control my symptoms. Although I was both hopeful and nervous about the procedure, his reassurance and the success stories of other patients gave me the confidence to proceed.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery:
Dr. Zeiad Yossry performed deep brain stimulation surgery. The procedure involved several steps that took place at different times. The first and second steps involved inserting the stimulator wires into the brain. The third step involved implanting a stimulator device or battery (pulse generator) under the skin of the upper chest. This surgery disrupts the irregular signals in the brain that cause involuntary movements in Parkinson's disease.
Recovering from Parkinson's symptoms:
Thanks to Dr. Zeiad Yossry's expertise and skill, I had a smooth recovery. I was amazed to regain natural movement. I could walk and carry objects without involuntary movements or tremors, and I was able to resume both my professional and social life.
