Some people sometimes refer to a spinal fracture as a broken back. Osteoporosis and trauma, such as falls, sports injuries, or car accidents, are usually the causes of vertebral fractures. Spinal fractures cause varying symptoms, and some patients may not even be aware of a fracture. However, when a fracture causes potentially serious symptoms, it requires prompt surgical intervention. Thanks to the expertise of Dr. Zeiad Yossry, Professor of Neurosurgery and Parkinson's Disease, severe fractures can be treated skillfully and with high success rates.
My struggle with a broken lumbar vertebra:
One day, I felt sudden pain in my lower back that worsened with movement. I experienced severe pain whenever I touched or pressed my lower back. The pain worsened if I tried to lift a grocery bag or bend down to pick something up. I also felt a dip in my spine, causing me to hunch forward that I hadn't noticed before. In addition, I experienced tingling and numbness in my back that extended down my legs. At this point, I began to have severe difficulty walking. I tried to ignore the symptoms and thought I just needed to rest, but to no avail. The symptoms became extremely distressing and interfered with my daily activities, and the pain became unbearable.
A friend of mine recently underwent spinal surgery with Dr. Zeiad Yossry, a professor of neurosurgery. The results were amazing, even though spinal surgeries are very concerning and risky. Based on the success of the surgery, I decided to consult Dr. Zeiad Yossry about my case.
Diagnosis of lumbar vertebrae fracture:
Dr. Zeiad Yossry performed a comprehensive examination of my condition, and I underwent several imaging tests and blood tests to accurately diagnose my condition. Dr. Zeiad Yossry informed me that I had a fracture in my lumbar vertebrae, which was compressing my spinal cord, causing tingling, numbness, and difficulty walking. He noted that this fracture can be caused by osteoporosis, prolonged use of cortisone medications, vitamin D deficiency, or hyperthyroidism. Dr. Zeiad Yossry recommended surgery, indicating that painkillers and a back brace would be ineffective because my spinal cord was under pressure.
Treatment of lumbar vertebrae fracture:
Dr. Zeiad Yossry performed a fracture stabilization surgery to limit movement between the fractured vertebrae and relieve pain. In this procedure, two or more vertebrae are joined together and held in the correct position, preventing them from moving until they have a chance to fuse. The surgery was successfully performed by using metal screws for strengthening the spine and preventing further movement at the fracture site.
Recovery from spinal fusion surgery:
During my recovery, Dr. Zeiad Yossry instructed me to avoid certain activities and types of movement for a period of time. At first, I needed help from family members with some tasks, but within a few weeks, I was able to perform my daily tasks without assistance. I quickly returned to my normal activities. Thanks to Dr. Zeiad Yossry's precision and skill, I experienced significant relief from the pain I was experiencing and regained my ability to walk without difficulty. I was now able to perform my tasks with vitality without any hindrance or disability, which made me feel happy and grateful for Dr. Zeiad Yossry's efforts.
